Excellent workers in the Excellent Workers: spouses and owners of Blitz Pizza
A Blitz Pizza két tulajdonosa és szerelmespárja
We hope we don’t have to tell you how much we love our job and how grateful we are that we can do what we truly enjoy. We noticed that we are surrounded by a lot of similarly lucky, passionate individuals who can rightly be called excellent workers. Sound familiar? The old bestseller pattern is now available in two new styles, meet them through the story of Anna, Dávid, and Blitz Pizza. Maybe prepare one or two slices of DIY pizza for the journey, too!
Melinda (founder and designer of DAIGE) dreamt up the Excellent Worker tee in 2018, as part of the ‘VP’ collection, after seeing the same expression on a badge she found at her grandma’s. The design got revamped for the 2020 holiday season, starting a new life in the form of a men’s and women’s jumper - alongside the bestselling, classic t-shirt, of course. This pair of new designs is first seen on two industrious ants, unstoppable creative minds, lovable energy bombs, Anna Baráth and Dávid Liptay, whom we invited for a short interview, too.
How was Blitz born?
Dávid:
The concept for Blitz was born out of pizza-making at home, which at some point became the compulsory element of every friendly get-together. Which is why it’s funny that after 3 years we are back at home, making Blitz pizza in our own kitchen, and urging others to do the same. The project itself started with the purchase and upcycling of an original Opel Blitz truck - where the name comes from - with the plan of selling our renowned “Dave pizza” out of it. Of course, the path was not so straightforward, but the gist of it is that by now we are proud owners of 3 seasonal places on top of the truck, too.
How do you share tasks between yourselves?
Anna:
Dávid is in charge of the daily operative tasks, and he is also the creative mind behind the brand. I run the PR and marketing side of things and try to create some structure in our days. This is our basic setup, but of course there are days that we are both in the kitchen pouring tomato puree and preparing garlic confit.
Does it ever worry you that you need to work together in your personal as well as your professional lives? (Anna and Dávid have been together for four years, and they said “I do” this year in the circle of their friends and family.)
Anna:
We did not have the time to really feel scared about it. Of course it worries us from time to time, but the tasks don’t stop coming and we sort of go with the flow.
What is it like to work together? What are each others’ strengths, and how do you deal with conflict, if there is any?
Dávid:
To be honest with you, we don’t have formed structures around when and how we do, or more importantly don’t discuss work-related stuff yet. We are exactly at this point when it becomes unavoidable to formalize this boundary.
Anna:
There are conflicts, but like in our personal life, we aim for harmony and constructive problem-solving in our professional life too. Dávid’s strength is his creativity, this is what continues to bring the brand forward: every single recipe, the DIY, and even the New Wave Pizza and Natural Wine Festival (which we organized for the second time this year, with plenty of success) came from his brain. These have been really important as these things allowed Blitz to grow organically in the last few years. My strength is that I don’t let these ideas go to waste and hassle him until we make them happen!
What are your plans for 2021, do you even plan at this point or just improvise?
Dávidi:
We are planning a really exciting project for the end of the year, and we want to develop the DIY further. 2021 will be, in many aspects, about improvisation, as soon we head to Portugal for a short time. Concrete plans not so much, but we have plenty of ideas and enthusiasm!
Can you tell us about the aforementioned Blitz DIY (Do It Yourself) set?
Dávid:
Basically, if you want to make some pizza, we take on the complicated, time-consuming part, and leave the creative tasks (toppings) - and the credit! - to you. In short, we send you everything you need to make our pizza in a box, with the pizza dough prepared by us - this takes 24 hours and it is made with sourdough, which is why the DIY sets must be preordered. You also get a range of toppings which also carry the essence of Blitz and include the little extra that our customers have grown to expect: mascarpone or tomato base, mozzarella, our secret ingredient, the Blitz infused oil, and pecorino romano cheese is in the sets, so people will experience the Blitz flavour profile they are used to. Extras can be added as well, at the moment these are the award-winning sausage of Pallér Sanyi, or Ventricina extra hot Italian salami - we are planning to expand these options in the future.
Anna:
The Blitz ‘Do It Yourself’ set is a good option to people who are vary of ordering a pizza (because let’s be honest, it’s really difficult to offer the same quality of a freshly made pizza with home delivery) but do not want to mess around making finicky dough. It also makes a fun activity for families or friends, so we really recommend trying it to everyone who likes pizza!
And be honest, is it really impossible to mess up?
Anna:
Well, what is messing up, really? We have made some that had holes, slightly burned, or turned out rectangular, but none of the pizzas ended up in the bin before.
